Lathliss, Dragon Queen, and Utvara Hellkite will supplement your board with Dragon tokens, providing more attackers that your opponents must deal with. Cards such as Serra Ascendant or Sheoldred, the Apocalypse will help you gain life to offset Tymna’s life drain. Other cards, such as Toxic Deluge, can help clear the board while benefiting from the extra life you gained.

Tymna helps you build card advantage after dealing damage to players. You can pay life to draw cards based on the players you damaged after your post-combat main phase. In larger games, this can quickly replenish your hand and provide more options after a drawn-out engagement. That tells me, for example, that I don’t want to be playing the most efficient aggressive black creatures in the format, because I expect games to go longer and win by card quality. However, in conjunction with playing a bunch of other burn spells and piling on your opponent with fire and lightning, Lava Spike becomes dramatically more powerful.
I’m assuming that the reason you’re building a deck in the first place is because you want to play with it at the end of the day. Play your finished deck in these settings and pay attention to how it plays. These names are used to describe the dual land cards in the Ikoria expansion, and they can also be used to represent the four-color combinations in other contexts. Planeswalkers such as Teferi, Temporal Archmage, benefit from Atraxa and Proliferate as well.

Deckbuilding can be a very complicated process, but also an enjoyable one. A lot of this advice is intended to help you get better and uncover the fundamentals behind deckbuilding. There’s still so much you can learn about how to build a deck, and all you can do is keep giving it a go and have fun while doing it.
If it’s a land card, you play it tapped, otherwise, you draw a card if it’s anything else. It’s a good way of controlling the cards that go into your hand while quickly bringing lands into play. Summoning ten other Elves and draining players of life is the way to go. With cards like Elvish Warmaster, you can quickly flood the battlefield with Elf tokens and start draining life. Elvish Archdruid and Leaf-Crowned Visionary turn weak 1/1 Elves into decent fighters.
Reevaluate Your Deck
The game plan you choose will likely influence what colors you want to be. So if your plan is to be an aggressive deck then you probably want to restrict the number of colors you use. There are a few other kinds of strategies than the ones I’m going to cover, but they’re the main four that you’ll see. You may have a mechanic you like, a tribe, or even just a cool card that you think is worth building around when you start your deckbuilding journey. So, embrace the 60-card philosophy, hone your deckbuilding skills, and prepare to unleash your strategic prowess upon the unsuspecting world of MTG!
Because in Draft, so much of the deck building really occurs while you’re grabbing your picks. Finally, there is an aspect to Magic that really defies a guide and that is your individual Bias. Some players are more prone to play Aggro, Control, or Combo Decks.
Most players get frustrated, curse the mana flood gods, lay down the second land, and then pass the turn. But Expert players know not to do this unless there is something that they could top deck next which would require both lands to be in play. By laying down 1 of your 2 lands, your opponent is now pretty sure that the remaining card is also a land. Maybe instead of drawing a second land, you instead draw an instant spell. It may be tempting to pick cards like Invoke the Divine or Revitalize to ‘power up’ your Pridemate, but this kind of thinking is problematic.
Look for cards that work well together, creating powerful synergies that can overwhelm opponents. This could involve pairing creatures with spells or finding combos that trigger impactful effects. At the heart of KrakenTheMeta’s MTG Arena deck builder is its AI technology.

Your off-curve spells should primarily be removal and counter-spells, as combat tricks are less relevant in an archetype that has fewer creatures. Notice there are still a decent number of creatures and enough two and three drops to consistently have early plays. This allows control to keep pace with aggro decks and eventually stabilize by playing powerful spells later in the game. Control decks usually win the game with powerful creatures, but can sometimes win the game by milling, or causing their opponent to run out of cards in their deck before them. These types of control combos edh decks can get away with running even fewer creatures.
Two copies can also be used when you’re not entirely sure which of the similar effects will be better. Let’s say you want to play four cheap removal spells in your deck. Both Hearthless Act and Bloodchief’s Thirst provide different advantages in different situations.
One of the worst feelings in draft is to see extremely powerful cards that you cannot take because you have already committed to other colors. Each deck’s mana curve will be different, but it’s important to work towards one that suits yours. Your aggressive deck doesn’t need to have any expensive cards and should peak a lot earlier.
